Mammothon to Encourage Breast Screening

TIMMINS - On May 4, 2016 the Ontario Breast Screening Program in Timmins and District Hospital is participating in Mammothon; a one-day breast screening marathon for women aged 50+, who are overdue or have never had a mammogram.

From Thunder Bay to Niagara, Mammothon is an event dedicated to screening as many women as possible for breast cancer at a participating Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) imaging site. With over 45 OBSP sites participating in Mammothon, the goal is to increase access and eliminate common barriers that prevent women from getting screened.  The OBSP provides high-quality breast screening free of charge for Ontario women. For more information on participating locations and screening eligibility, please visit www.mammothon.ca.

“Last year, 835 women across the province were screened during Mammothon, and three Regional Cancer Programs were involved. This year we’re excited to announce Mammothon has expanded to six Regional Cancer Programs across the province with an ambitious target of screening over 1000 women on May 4, 2016.” says Nicole Gauthier, Regional Coordinator, cancer screening engagement and promotion with the Northeast Cancer Centre.

“We know that many women are still putting off their mammogram, and we want to encourage all eligible women in our community to make the time, take action, and book their mammogram. In the North East region, we have 9 participating in Mammothon. We wouldn’t be able to host such an inspiring event without the dedication and support of all of our OBSP sites” says Nicole Gauthier.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian women with over 9500 Ontario women diagnosed in the next year, but only 60 percent of eligible women in Ontario are being screened for breast cancer.  According to Cancer Care Ontario, this disease affects one in nine women, most of whom do not have a family history of breast cancer.
