TADH and NE LHIN Exploring Options to Maintain Sleep Centre Services

Timmins, ON — November 15, 2017 - Due to ongoing financial pressures, Timmins and District Hospital has initiated a review of the Timmins and District Sleep Centre. The review of the six-bed Sleep Centre is now in the early stages.

As part of the review process, TADH is required to submit a service delivery change form to the North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN). As this documentation has now been submitted, TADH and the NE LHIN have begun discussions about the proposed changes and their impacts on the community.

“Both Timmins and District Hospital and the North East LHIN recognize that a Sleep Centre is a valuable service to residents of the City of Timmins and area, and to the medical community who refer patients to the service,” said Blaise MacNeil, President and CEO of TADH. “Both of our organizations are committed to exploring all avenues that will allow a Sleep Centre to remain open and sustainable, without compromising the excellent quality of care being provided.”

The review process, now underway, allows for an informed discussion about current pressures and alternate service delivery models that could be considered to improve the financial sustainability of a Timmins-based Sleep Centre. The review will focus on ways to maintain, and possibly enhance, current services offered at the hospital based Sleep Centre, which will include examining possible changes to the current operational model.

“We have had positive initial discussions with TADH about the future of the Sleep Centre,” said Christine Leclair, Sub-Region Officer-Cochrane, with the NE LHIN. “The North East LHIN is looking forward to continuing to work together with TADH to identify potential solutions.”

To inform the review about possible alternate operational models, the TADH will be issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to gather information from other similarly-sized Sleep Centres operating in the region and the province.

The Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) is a level B, fully accredited community, referral and teaching hospital serving the residents of the City of Timmins and Cochrane District as well as the adjoining areas of the Temiskaming, Sudbury and Algoma districts. The hospital offers a full range of medical, surgical, critical care, maternity, newborn, pediatric, mental health and diagnostic imaging services.
